Finding a good web developer

by Frank Carlington

The search for a good web developer can be confusing at times, and it helps to know what you’re looking for. Since web developers don’t have to have a license or a permit to conduct business, the market is full of fly-by-night operations. If you read a little further, you will pick up some good tips that will definitely make your search a little bit easier.

Web developers that are good at both web design and programming are very rare indeed- as these are two highly specific areas of expertise. During your search for a developer, you should know exactly who’s designing the site, and who’s programming it. Be wary if the same person is handling both aspects of your project.

Look at some of the sites your developer has previously done work on- that will give you an idea of what you’re getting into, and it will perhaps give you some ideas as to what you want your own site to look like when it’s finished.

In the nineties when the Internet was in its infancy, a business could become more successful simply by running a website. In today’s world, almost every business has a glossy, professional site up and running. Your ideal developer will be proficient in SEO also.

A lot of developers are selling for the hosting companies. If your developer is like this, you may run into some issues. For example, if your website encounters issues, you may not be sure who will be working to fix it. You should have a clear cut idea of who is responsible for doing what.

When you’ve chosen a developer, it’s important that you check their references. They can indicate how well the developer manages their relationships with other clients, and it will tell you whether or not they are reliable.

OK- you’ve chosen a developer. You should ask them how much you’ll be charged for the upkeeping of your website, and at what point your project will go from creation to maintenance. For developers that create domains for their customers, those domains should be put in the customer’s name or that of their business. This will allow them to make hosting changes.

New Business Web Site Design

by Stephen Grisham Sr.

Is it advisable for a new business to try designing and creating a website on its own? This is probably not a great idea unless you have gone to school for this. Web design, coding, and flash are usually skills for the professional. The amount of education needed is simply overwhelming. You don’t want to devote time to the design of a site when you should be focused on selling!

Site Builders, with many template choices, can be found, and it’s possible to create a good site even if you’re a novice; however, for companies needing more than just an online presence, expert web design is best. An expertly designed site constructed around a Content Management System provides the best versatility because you can make small adjustments and additions on your own.

The website for your new business (or any business) should have pages that are well designed, neat, and have useful and informative content. Describe your company along with its goods and services to your online audience. Stress the factors that make your business, service, or product stand out from others.

Your website pages should feature a consistent design that is not complex. You do not want to go into a lot of minute details and bore them; be concise and to the point. Create a comfortable atmosphere for visitors, which will influence them to use your service.

Tell them some information about your company. Adopt a professional manner of addressing viewers, but don’t fall into the habit of using excessive jargon. Use simple and easy to understand language, but don’t talk to people like they are simple. Put up some testimonials from your satisfied clients once you get a few. There isn’t anything that is better for increasing confidence.

Have an expert design your company’s logo, in the event that you don’t already possess one. Again, from page to page, position your logo and menus consistently, which will keep audiences from getting distracted away from your main content.

Getting a good web developer

by Frank Carlington

The search for a good web developer can be confusing at times, and it helps to know what you’re looking for. Since web developers don’t have to have a license or a permit to conduct business, the market is full of fly-by-night operations. If you read a little further, you will pick up some good tips that will definitely make your search a little bit easier.

Many web developers claim to be a “jack of all trades”, but there are few that are equally proficient at design and programming. Those two areas are very specialized, and developers that can effectively do both are few and far between. When you’re looking for a web developer, you should be aware of who will be designing your site, and who will be responsible for programming it.

Examine your developer’s portfolio. Looking at sites that they have worked on will give you an inkling of what kind of work they are capable of, and may just inspire you to incorporate some of their ideas into your own site.

At the Internet’s inception, merely having a Web site was enough to attract business. But today, a Web presence is essential to the success of your business. Be sure that your web developer has a good knowledge of SEO techniques, and that their services will improve your search engine rankings.

Hosting is another issue that needs to be considered. A lot of developers are really just salesmen for hosting companies. With these, if you run into problems with your web site or your email account, sometimes you don’t really know who should be fixing the problem for you. Make sure that you know who’s responsible for each area before you sign a contract with a developer.

When you’ve chosen a developer, it’s important that you check their references. They can indicate how well the developer manages their relationships with other clients, and it will tell you whether or not they are reliable.

There are a couple more things that you need to consider. You should know how much you’ll be charged for maintenance on your site, and when the site-building phase ends and the maintenance stage begins. If your developer is registering a domain for you, make sure that they’re putting it in your name or that of your business. This will allow you to make a hosting change by yourself. Also, you should make sure that you have a copy of your site.

WordPress – Blog Software Second to None

by Stephen Grisham Sr.

Be cautious and start your blog off correctly. It’s difficult to change directions and begin all over again.

Hire a website host for your blog if you can afford it, and verify that WordPress can be run on your server. “No Fee” blogging? A word to the wise: you get what you pay for.

Unless you are a computer wiz, be sure that whichever hosting company you select to host your blog includes WordPress and Fantastico in the package. WordPress is automatically installed with Fantastico. The other option is to download and install WordPress by yourself, which is difficult.

WordPress is easy to use and you do not need to be a computer programmer to be able to use it. It works as soon as it is installed, and you can begin blogging right away.

What makes WordPress better than others? WordPress has the most users. WordPress has been established for some time. A wide variety of themes are available in the WordPress library. (The appearance and feel of your blog can be altered with themes.) Unless you want to alter a function that cannot be done with ‘canned’ plug-ins, it is unnecessary to have any knowledge of designing or coding.

Plug Ins: You can add things to your blog with plug-ins. If you know PHP, you can make your own or you can select third-party plug-ins. The WordPress website offers plug-ins. There are quite a few of them and they do everything you can imagine — there is even a plug-in that will generate an XML sitemap of your site for Google.

You have the entire administrative control with your blog when you use WordPress. There are so many things that you can do. The user management functions of WordPress are excellent. For instance, authors can write articles and, upon approval, editors can publish those articles, while administrators can alter the design of the blog — but none will have “premisions: to do or alter the work of others.

Don’t waste hours of your time only to have to tear it all down and convert it over to WordPress.

Affiliate Site Essentials

by Stephen Grisham Sr.

No matter what may be said out there, not every affiliate program can earn a consistently huge profit. There is opportunity for profit, but you’ll need to truly stand out in order to seize it. You cannot expect this money to just become yours without any effort. You must put forth effort.

Find a Niche

A niche market helps you determine what specialized products you should endorse. Do not use “sporting goods” for example. There is too much competition in this category, as it is too broad. Use maybe “fresh-water bass fishing lures” as a smaller niche.

Drawing Traffic to your Site

There are multiple techniques for bringing traffic to your affiliate website. As your basic strategy, pick no more than 3 methods, as this is much more practical than too many.

It is becomng more and more difficult to get free traffic from the big search engines. However, it is still possible if you create an attractive site and put in some effort to rank it high in Google. You will need to have constantly updated, quality content to achieve this. Get as many “in-bound” links as you can (links to your site from other websites). You can forget about directory submissions when you use an affiliate program, though, because affiliate sites are not accepted by many directories.

A different option is to just pay for your traffic. Known as PPC (Pay Per Click), this system consists of paying a search engine for each visitor they send to you. This may actually be cheaper than hiring someone to keep your search rankings high.

Build Your Own Email List

The best way to do this is to offer a free bonus or service to visitors of your site. Be sure to get their email address through this process.

Be cautious and always use an opt-in/opt-out when emailing people on your list. You don’t want to be labeled as a spammer. When someone asks to be deleted from your list, delete them immediately.

Be careful not to deluge your list with emails. Don’t email everyone on your list every day. When you communicate too often, you will run the risk of annoying your contacts. You should allow breathing room for your clients. Only email weekly or monthly newsletters.
